Advanced Editing Workshop
In today's lesson, we were in the editing suite looking at how to edit our music video.
The most important thing to do is to sync the footage with the music using the clapper Board and you must do this with every single shot so that they are all in sync and makes it much easier for the rest of the edit. You must also rename each shot so that you can identify them easily. Don't mention name of actor or actress, use their role instead e.g. Close Up singer, or Mid Guitarist and Drummer. You should also group the shots together so that access to them is easier especially in the edit.
Make a performance cut - this is where you make a music video and only include the band and afterwards, for the final cut, drop in the singer and some narrative elements. There is little use in making a rough cut especially in the short time we have to edit our videos so instead we create the performance cut to the best of our abilities.
Best method is to edit 1 hour at a time so you don't get overly bored and get distracted because there you won't make the right decisions when editing. It is also best to edit 10 seconds at a time and focus on it to the best of your abilities so that you can make the right editing decisions therefore, it looks great. Do not show off your video to others as it wastes time. In that time you could polish off a dodgy bit of the video that you're not too sure on.
Three Rules to follow when editing
1. You must have a close up of the singer's face on the first line to establish who the lead singer is.
2. Group shots together - Have 2 shots in a row of the drummer, then cut to 3 similar shots of the guitarist e.g. guitar neck, then face then strings.
3. Cut on motion - This will help the video flow much more as it won't look static if the singer is motionless creating excitement for the audience as it won't be boring.
Listen to the music and try and match some of the edit to the music, for example if you hear a 'swish' in the music, have your lead singer spin around or have someone doing some motion that would create wind. After the final cut, colour your footage so that it looks perfect. Not too pale, not too bright not dominated by 1 colour and hopefully not too dark. Take this time to add any effect shots like a split screen to make the video more interesting.
This is an example from the matrix where the footage has been colour corrected.
You must also clean the edit by going over the footage 6 or 7 times correcting anything so that you are happy with the final edit.
Organisation of costumes
We are going to ask our cast if they have any outfits similar to what we have proposed. If they do, then we will ask them to bring in their costume for us.
Ady, our lead singer has got a similar style to alternative pop singers so we imagine she will have some similar clothing to what we are looking for. If not, we will source some back up costumes.
Madi has found a shirt that will look great on our keys player, Callum. So she will test the shirt on him before half term.
For the other two, our Drummer and Bassist, we will look in charity shops and online for costumes

Organisation of Props
For our props we are not going to need many, however, the ones we will need will be vital for the music video and star image.
Instrument
- Drum kit - the school will provide the kit
Midi keyboard - We will borrow from a friend
Bass - We shall also borrow this from a friend.
For our lead singer, we will decorate her with some jewellery that will look great on her, we will get these from cheap websites so that we can limit our budget and not overspend on props that may not look good on the day.
2nd Set design meeting
For our second set design meeting, we decided on having a large black flat wall behind to cover the rest of the set. This will allow the television borders to blend in with the background. This will be even better with the added effects of the smoke machine. The wall will be covered on various areas with Ultra-violet paint splatters and when ultra-violet light is shone on the paint, it will show up and look very cool.
no problems showed up with the original set design so it was a very simple and easy meeting. The set design is great - no problems with that and the little side booths and it is very easy to set up and film in which is great news.
Our music video is going to be similar to a Multicam shoot. For example, we have 3 cameras to shoot the same band to produce many angles.

Audience Profiling
It is useful for us as an institution to build up accounts of how our audience is constructed. This gives the institution the opportunity to market effectively to their age range whether that be 15-16 year olds or 40-41 years olds. When marketing to a younger audience, the age range must be very small and precise. Saying that a target audience is for Teenagers is very risky as a 15 year old is very different to a 13 year old and so is an 18 year old so the age range should stick to around 1-2 year age gap.
Our Target Audience - Female 16-17. Target audiences are very useful for marketing as you have the opportunity to make certain choices and specific decisions for the age range that you are marketing for . This helps your marketing team with making the correct marketing decisions which help enhance the star image that you'll create during the music campaign.
Segmentation of audience
- Demographic
- Psychographic.
Demographics - Where an audience is segmented when taking into account social issues for example:
- Sexuality
- Age
- Gender
-Race
- Class
JICNARS scale
The JICNARS scale compares your 'Social Grade' to your social status which is apprehended by your occupation and wages compared to the other occupations on the market.
The Higher on the scale
- Higher Wages
- Higher Status
- Higher Class
An example of an occupation that would be higher on the JICNARS at level 'A' scale would be a doctor or a lawyer and something at level 'E' would be a cleaner or even someone with no occupation.
Psychographic (Lifestyle Profiling)
Much more in depth. It is based on ideology ( Values, Beliefs and Lifestyle ) - They are sorted into a number of individual and distinctive sections which state which ideology you belong to.
VALS
An online presence will determine your audience as an artist. The more connected you are to your audience, the more successful your star image will be. Since the birth of social media, companies have made it very simplistic to promote media, including for music artists, the opportunity to promote new music, new merchandise and tour dates. Music campaigns can also be easily promoted and produced through social media where short sections of their song may be released to entice the the audience to possible making a pre order on the album that may be released with the single. Along with the whole promotion side of social media, Artists can easily receive feedback from other social media users through comment sections in their posts. Comments may be negative or positive but either way, they help the artist improve on their music or their actions on social media or even in real life meaning their Star Image will be altered.
In our own music campaign, we will create an instagram account for our artist where we will promote the music video and single that we are going to film so it attracts the audience's attention and creates demand for our video which will then end up receiving lots of views from not only local audiences but hopefully international audiences as well. We will create merchandise that matches the single and the music video along with various Photoshoots which will hopefully promote the artist and the single along with enhancing the star image of our artist.
For our target audience, which is females who are 16-17 we will include many marketing techniques used by other alternative pop artists like sneak peaks of songs or music video and lots of visual aids as well to create awareness for the video and therefore we can have a successful music campaign.
Mood Board
Ive used these images because they have both fit the aesthetic for our target audience but are also heavily linked to our own music video. The lighting is similar along with the costumes and props - very dark with interesting lighting patterns and colour schemes which are often consumed very effectively by our target audience.

What Props do we need?
We are considering getting a microphone for our singer to hold why lip syncing to the music. This will hopefully add interest to the shots.
Along with the microphone, it's vital that we source some good quality instruments that stand out from those in other music videos. The drum Kit will be the hardest to try and find but hopefully our cast members will have instruments that they'll let us use in the video.
Our lead singer will be decorated with lots of jewellery which can adhere to the alternative pop conventions. This will make more interesting and enhance the star image that we are in the process of creating.

What Costumes do we need?
We need a costume for our lead singer that stands out from the rest of the band to help the star image. The colours must be bold and work with the set.
We had an idea of having a dress for her with a really obscure and colourful design on it which would fit the music video really well.
For the band, the same costume would work really nicely as they are notified as being all one unit so maybe matching black and white suits or plain, one colour outfits.

Feedback from Set and Lighting meeting
Today we had our set and lighting meeting with 'Atmospheric Dave' where we proposed our ideas for our set and lighting.
Our Feedback was...Positives
- Very simple design but worked really well with the idea
- The lighting was very detailed and set out which colours were required clearly
- The set would create a great atmosphere even with the booths behind the set.
Things to consider
- Look at more colours that would work on the day that would create some change in the set.
- look at being able to be creative with the different shot combinations
Set Design
This is the our set design that we planned and set out for most of the week. We only require one set as the television screens will be the main focus of the video. We will have different shots on the tv screens that will make it interesting for the audience. These will be performed in the booths behind the main set as shown in the diagram.
For lighting, we are thinking of having pink and blue in the left booth and pink and orange in the right booth. Behind the tv screen we will have blue fluorescent lights along with a smoke machine which will add atmosphere to the video.
We will also cover the booths and the back wall with the words 'Spider Bites' in black font to stick with the spider bites theme.

Developed Ideas
We discussed some new ideas for set design as our group are struggling to come up with a good and solid idea for a set design.
We came up with this idea to have two televisions screens and put them around the singer or any band member. We can then have as an example, the singer in the middle of the two screens and the bassist on one of the screens and the drummer on the other. We would should this by having a 3 camera set up and filming all three parts simultaneously so we get this three way set up.

Advanced Lighting Workshop
We an advanced lighting workshop where we were able to identify different types of lighting along with ways that you can create more light on set by reflecting it off different objects.
First of all, lights create heat and they are very bright so when you're putting a sheet over the light, make sure that is has protective gel on it so that it doesn't catch on fire and create a safety hazard. There are also two commands in the studio when switching on the light. First off is "Eyes Down" this is where you look down because someone is about to switch on a light that could possibly blind you. The second command is "Sparking" when someone switches on the light. These are just safety terms so that you are not blinded on set.
The Red head, is often used for 3 point lighting which is the most basic form of lighting on a set you can get. 3 point lighting is used to create depth in a shot and decreases any chance of major shadows on the face of the actor. We have a key light which is usually to the left or the right of the actor, a fill light which is to the opposite side of the key light so that shadows are not created and a back light for depth in the shot.
Fluorescent Lights are used to add colour on the set. They are artistic to look at and can even be included in shot because of their aesthetic value that they propose. A coloured gel is needed to change the colour of the fluorescent and that needs to wrap around the bulb inside the glass casing it comes in.
Soft Box lights create a soft light around the subject. They are not powerful lights and so they have to be put very close to the actor or actress on set which isn't very practical for some sets. They come in a rectangular shape and the light is useful from about head to waist.
The D.O.P and director are very different. The D.O.P is in charge of the way that the set looks through the lens with all the right shot angles and sizes along with the lighting on set. The D.O.P is in charge of the overall way that the film looks through the lens and then on screen.
You must always adjust the light for the camera and not the camera to the light. This is because the camera may not shoot swell with an exposure that's too high of too low. The white balance settings would be all over the place, so would the shutter speed. This would make the camera function much worse and not look as aesthetically pleasing as it would when the lights are adjusted to the camera. On set lighting technicians can easily work with the lights so that they can adjust to the camera. They can use a tinted wrap or gel to lower the brightness or alter the light particles so that they are more spread out across the subject. You should also always look through the lens when adjusting the light and not the tv monitor as it won't give an accurate reading of what the set looks like where as through the Camera or the Black Magic URSA Mini 4.6K the screen and the lens give of very accurate visuals of what the set looks like.
You can do this with a trace or an even bigger version like this.
This separates the light particles out so that the light isn't too concentrated on one area which doesn't look good on camera.
Adjusting the aperture so it is wider lets more light in the camera so the shot is brighter. You don't want to adjust the aperture too wide as the shit will become over exposed and so it will be un-useable in the edit. Closing the aperture lets little to no light into the lens so the shot will be very dark which is useful for when you have many bright lights on the set and in shot.
A Matte box attaches to the end of a prime lens on a camera so excess light coming from the edges can't be seen in the shot as it is blocked.
A Practical light is a light that is not on set and a dress light is a light on set that can be seen like a lampshade.
