Album Digipak - Draft

The style is very similar to that of a vintage comic/Something from the mid 50s and gives a nod to various superheroes. Having the band members on the inside represents a superhero team like the Avengers or Justice League.

The colour scheme is going to be dark blues, blacks and yellows to replicate the darkness of night and highlight the contrast between the suburban buildings and the light that shines from each household indicating warmth and community.

There isn't really a link between our music video for 'Spider Bites' and my album design, I didn't feel as in there was enough creativity coming from the song that I could base a full Digipak so I got creative and thought of something completely different.

Our target audience would buy our album because of its original design. It is mysterious as it has a silhouette of our lead singer on the front and they may want to find out who it is through listening to the album.

The disc is the inside of the spot light shining up at the sky. I thought because the spotlight is round and can fit the dimensions of a disk. It would be a really good idea to have part of the original scene on the disk to carry the theme over.

The back of my Digipak has the silhouette of the lead singer looking towards the band's call for her to come to them and be their lead singer. This creates mystery towards the singer and enhances her star image so that it can also attract our target audience to purchase copies of the digipak.

Album Design - Sketch

This is the Paper design that I have originally drawn out for my album design.

The idea is to have the band call out for their lead singer via a spot light to the sky projecting the name of the band onto the clouds.

The names of the songs will be on the back with a photo of the lead singer on a ledge of a sky scraper looking up to the sky with the song list next to her.

The disc will look like the inside of the spot light shining up at the sky and the second page will have headshots of each band member.

- A collector's special edition will appeal to fans.

- Adds to the Star Image

- Helps so sell and market the genre

- Helps to promote their ideology

- The artwork connects to the fans

- You can usually tell if they're an artist or a band

Why is album artwork Still important.

- Usually a solo artists will have a photo of the artist and the name of them and a band will usually have an image and the name of the band.

Albums must have - Technical Conventions

2. Album Name

3. Track List (On the back)

4. Barcode

5. Parental Advisory (Any Swearing on any songs)

6. Record Label

Genre Conventions - Album Cover

Our Artist is an alternative pop singer so we must have conventions that belong to the same genre and are similar to our music video.

Henry Jenkins - Participatory Culture

Participatory Culture is the way in the internet creates and shares content of all qualities amongst each other. In the process, everyone becomes a producer and a consumer therefore the term ‘Prosumer is created’. Prosumers often create content from media that has already been produced. The proliferation of hardware and the internet becoming easily accessible has created the expansion of participatory culture.

Jenkins also mentions spreadability. A quote from one of his works states that “If it doesn’t spread, it’s dead.” Say for example, for a music artist to make money from a song/music video, a whole music campaign is needed for awareness and demand to be created and spread. If a song is released without a campaign, it will gain limited attention and receive limited funds as a result of the release.

How could we apply this to our music campaign?

We will be creating merchandise to sell on our website. This is because merchandise and live shows combined often generates the most amount of money for artists.  Merchandise will consist of having various items of clothing with the brand of our band printed mainly on the front of the item. The simple design lets a consumer know that the item is branded by the band.

Along with the selling of merchandise, We will also use social media to our advantage in our music campaign. Many artists use social media to their advantage as I have researched in previous posts. Artist's social media accounts often promote upcoming events, songs and live tours as in some ways it is the most affective marketing method as social media use takes up a lot of a person's daily routine. A successful social media campaign will effectively gain the most awareness and demand for your artist.

Test Shoot Feedback and Development

Our intentions with the test shoot was to create a music video which was as similar to the real thing as it could be. For obvious reasons we could not have 2 television screens and 3 cameras for the production so we did the best we could with it. We used 2 fluorescent tube lights and a soft box to give more light to the shot as it was initially quite dark. The set was very simple and we got 2-3 shots of each band member.

In one of our lessons, we screened our test shoot to the class and got some feedback for it.

Our first piece of feedback was to direct our cast members better. In the video, the actors look very miserable and unenthusiastic, this may because they don't know their parts too well.

The video was quite repetitive - It needed a variety of shot sizes and angles to compensate for the lack of Tv screens.

Needed more performance element so it can be less repetitive and boring for audience.

Our Lead Singer Ady looks brilliant, very chilled and confident - cast brilliantly, everyone suits their roles perfectly.

The things we need to develop

Think about directing the cast and giving them clearer instructions so they can look confident in the video and not look clueless on the actual shoot day. We will do another rehearsal with the band where we will give the instructions.

Me and Alfie are going to think of some shot ideas that don't involve lip syncing which we can use as well as the performance elements. This will make the video more interesting and build the star image of our lead singer.

We are also going to experiment with some more lighting techniques and colours which will make the video better and original.

We are going to give our lead singer more direction. Even though she looks amazing and plays the part really well, we are going to make her happier and more flirty on the set.
